Homeschool
Colorado requires a moderate amount of recordkeeping for your homeschool, so make sure you stay on top of it.
Can I Teach?
There is no state requirement for you to meet in order to teach.
Do I Have to Notify the State?
Yes. You must provide a written notification to the school district that you will begin homeschooling 14 days before the start of the program.
The notification must include:
- Name of each child attending
- Age of each child
- Place of residence
- Number of attendance hours for each child enrolled in the homeschool program.
Additional Records for the State
You must teach the following subjects at minimum:
- Reading
- Writing and Speaking
- Mathematics
- History
- Civics
- Literature
- Science
- Courses of Instruction in the Constitution of the United States
Your child must complete a standardized assessment in grades 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11
You must maintain records of your child’s attendance, test results (i.e. standardized tests), and immunizations.
How Many Days a Year do I Have to Teach?
Your homeschool program must have no fewer than 172 days of instruction, averaging at least 4 hours per day.
Make sure you keep attendance of these school days.
Compulsory Attendance Age
The compulsory attendance age is the age range in which your child must be attending school of some type.
In Colorado, this range is 6 to 16 (if your child turns 6 by August 1).
Public School Sports
Colorado allows equal access to homeschool students for extracurricular and interscholastic activities.
