Homeschool
Wyoming has requirements including annual notifications and required subjects.
Can I Teach?
There is no requirement for you to meet in order to teach.
Do I Have to Notify the State?
Yes. You must notify your local school district when you start your homeschool. Depending on your district, this could be a letter of intent or a registration form. I’d recommend contacting your local school district for their specific requirements.
Additionally, each year you need to submit your curriculum to the school district. This can be a summary, but must include the required subjects listed below.
Required Subjects
You must teach Wyoming’s core subjects including:
- Reading
- Writing
- Literature
- Math
- Science
- History
- Civics
How Many Days a Year do I Have to Teach?
Wyoming does not have a requirement for the number of school days or hours. For your reference, Wyoming’s public school year is 175 days.
I strongly recommend you keep attendance in case it’s needed by the Department of Education or for something like college applications.
Compulsory Attendance Age
The compulsory attendance age is the age range in which your child must be attending school of some type.
In Wyoming, your child must attend school if they turn 7 years old on or before September 15th, or until they either complete 10th grade or reach age 16.
Public School Sports
The Wyoming High School Activities Association allows homeschool students to participate in its activities. However, you have to register your homeschool with them and pay a fee, and your child must meet academic eligibility requirements. Academic eligibility is determined either by standardized test score or established by a certified teacher in Wyoming.
Contact your local school for more information. Some information can also be found in the WHSAA Handbook.
